Online shopping has become very popular of late and with many people having access to the internet nowadays, online shopping has become a very popular way of buying things.
Online shopping all started around the early 1990s and proved successful as it let people buy whatever they wanted and whenever they wanted at their convenience. The success has continued not just because of the convenience but also because there is more choice online and better pricing and on top of this, information is a lot easier to get hold of.
When it first arrived it was mainly the middle to high classes who first took advantage of its arrival.
In 1992, the first online book store was created called Books.com and two years after that, Amazon was created. Around the time of 1994, other advances such as online banking came about and a whole host of developments were introduced to the internet, one of the biggest being an online Pizza Hut. The year 1994 was also the year that Netscape introduced SSL encryption which enabled any personal or private information, such as bank account details, to remain secure.
In the mid 90s, important developments in the online shopping world were introduced. Firstly, Amazon expanded its online shopping capabilities in 1995 and in 1996, eBay was created and this had a huge effect on online shopping.
It was found at the start that online shopping had a target audience of mainly young men who had a large income and a university education, however, this appears to be changing. In the USA around the start of the internet, there were only a few women users, but by the year 2001 this had changed and there was a vast increase in the amount of women online, in fact, 52.8 per cent of the online population were women by this time.
